‘So many surprises and just so much fun with such beautiful humans.

‘Thanks to everyone who came. I will miss you all.’

It comes as Dan’s former co-host Lewis Minchin made a surprise return to BBC Breakfast to honor his final day on the show.

Lewis left the show last autumn after 20 years but returned today for a warm hug with his friend.

His current co-host Sally Nugent led the outpouring as the BBC aired a 30-minute tribute to Walker, which saw the appearance of Minchin, along with his Strictly Come Dancing partner Nadia Bychkova and members of the Breakfast production team.

His replacement is yet to be announced, with his departure amid the BBC’s ‘brain drain’, which previously saw Andrew Marr, Emily Maitlis and John Sopel leave the corporation.

The host admitted he doesn’t know who will replace him, but said he hopes he cares about the show, the people he works with, and the audience.

He continued: ‘It’s always been my dream to do this kind of work and work with people like you, so thank you.

‘It’s come a lot faster than I thought. It seems a bit unrealistic, the fact that I will not be sitting on the couch anymore, that I will not be sitting next to you from today, that this is my last day.’

An emotional Lewis told her former co-host: ‘It’s an absolute pleasure and very emotional to be here.

‘I know many people will be deeply saddened by your passing, as you have touched the hearts of the nation in the last six years. I know people love to see you. I enjoyed working with you.’

Addressing the audience at the end of the show, he said: ‘There aren’t many jobs where you have a chance to give voice to other people. That’s what we all love to do more than anything else.

‘Thanks for tuning in. Thanks for all the lovely messages over the years. We never take any of these lightly.

‘To be serious for a minute, in a time when trust and truth have never been more important, it’s great to work with a team that does everything we can to make sure that we do Fair and accurate.’
